Shannon Lance Mitchel attended the University of Houston College of Optometry, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and received a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree in 2008. He earned his Bachelors (B.S.) degree in Animal Science in 2004 from Texas A&M University. He is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the Texas Optometric Association (TOA). Dr. Mitchel has been in private practice for 15 years.
During that time, he was initially introduced to the Stephenville community while working alongside Dr. Monty Banks from 2008-2009 at Texas State Optical (TSO), before taking a position at Cataract and Eye Center in Cleburne/Glen Rose, TX. Working in a multispecialty ophthalmology practice with Dr. Steve Surratt, M.D. allowed him to gain extensive knowledge and experience managing and treating various medical ocular disorders.
Dr. Mitchel enjoys all aspects of eye care, especially the ability to provide personalized service to people of all ages. He is inspired by the range of services he gets to provide daily in his private practice, including the creativity needed to keep the attention of the preschooler experiencing their first eye exam, to the persistence the teenager needs learning to insert and remove contact lenses for the first time.
He enjoys educating the college graduate on LASIK comanagement expectations and navigating the options to help with presbyopia such as multifocal and monovision contact lens fittings. He has extensive knowledge in counseling patients about intraocular lens selections for cataract surgery, treating/managing diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, specialty contact lenses for corneal disorders, dry eye and numerous other ocular conditions.
When not seeing patients, you can find Dr. Mitchel enjoying the outdoors. Some of his favorites include mountain biking, hiking, and spending time on his family’s ranch in West Texas. He enjoys evening walks with his wife, who is also an optometrist, and their energetic Australian shepherd. Dr. Mitchel is grateful to the Banks family for the opportunity to purchase the TSO and is excited to come full circle back to Stephenville.
